Reflective Commentary
The task of creating my own website to communicate my findings on the impact and degradation caused by excessive traffic from cruise tour ships originally seemed daunting. However throughout the process of creating this website I have found that I enjoyed the creative aspect of designing and editing the layout of every page, which I wished to reflect the harsh and cool arctic aesthetic as to be in keeping with my theme. I originally had underestimated the time that it may take to create a website which I felt I could be proud of and one which was well informed and communicated all the key information. Therefore, after originally attempting to dive straight into the content I eventually decided to create a desktop folder of resources, such as images inspired by those on websites such as the WWF, which greatly impacted my own research, or images that I felt strongly reinforces the message of each webpage or sub webpage. As you can observe particularly well on the sub page of 'Environmental Sacrifice' named 'Physical Arctic Degradation' the chosen images reinforce the webpage subject that there is a real risk of environmental damage, such as pollution or spilt bilge water, when the vast and unsuitable cruise ships attempt to tour the Arctic environment. Overall I feel that I have created a webpage which is not only interesting to view, but informative and interactive. My first port of call once I had chosen the medium of WIX was to establish a website structure was to refer back to the layout of my essay on a similar subject, I had enjoyed the division of information I have used in this essay as It did cover a wide variety of the different angles for cruise tourism, the environmental risk, the imposition of tourism on Svalbard, and sustainability guidelines provided by the WWF, which could have been a relatively narrow subject. I therefore chose to combine the structure of the previous essay and to take into account the feedback which I received for this and use it as a base to decide on this websites structure. I also used this feedback to develop the content of the website, such as advice suggesting that I include the Crystal Serenity's controversial voyage through the NorthWest Passage. With regards to the text and my own research to inform the website, I felt that whilst the essay provided a base layout the information I had learnt would not have been sufficient. Therefore I engaged in a great deal of further reading to expand on my preliminary ideas. This included reading chapters 5, 9 and 10 of Michael Luck's Novel 'Cruise Tourism in polar regions promoting environmental and social sustainability? ' which compared tourism and cruise tourism in both the Arctic and Antarctica and the looming impact of climate change on the levels of sea ice. As well as this 'Last Chance Tourism' by Harvey Lemelin and Jackie Dawson was extremely useful, which examines the boom in arctic tourism as there is a desire for travellers to experience destination motivated by the knowledge that these placed are on the verge of changing, or disappearing forever. This book in particular has caused me to gain a greater understanding of the fragility of the arctic environment and the habitats of the species which live there, however as well as this it has meant that I more greatly understand the motivation to visit the Arctic despite the fact that it becoming a controversial destination. Many tourists feel that they are insignificant to make a great impact on the diminishing environment yet still understandably feel inclined to experience It for themselves. The WWF guidelines on ensuring that your tour is as sustainably minded as possible offer visitors a way to combat this and ensure they themselves are not enabling a destructive form of tourism. As a result of reading this my own awareness of how it is possible to indirectly aid destruction has increased from the start of the course.
Along with feeling that my own knowledge and awareness has expanded because of my own research over the past four months I also greatly enjoyed the designing process of this website and choosing interactive aspects such as the animated image slideshows on the homepage, WWF and Alternative tourism webpages. Although I can understand the theory that there should be a consistent theme to every webpage in order to create an overall consistent aesthetic, I have slightly varied this on each page to mirror the different topics and breakdown of content On many of my websites pages you will find that the background changes whilst the Font's size and Font and Title styling remain the same. This was a result of a Conscious effort to keep the website engaging. Such as the References page and Reflective commentary have different themed backgrounds purposefully to distinguish them from the actual websites content. The font style on every page keeps the overall styling invariable so it is clear all pages are part of the same website, therefore it felt appropriate to change the background animations as it wouldn't too greatly effect the overall consistency.
Overall the process of presenting a presentation, writing an essay and producing a website all along the lines of the same subject does insure that the topic is firmly embedded in your knowledge, however I have tried to ensure that I do not repeat my previous work and have found new content for this website. The structure of the module is thorough in that it ensures that even despite entering the module with little knowledge about my topic I now feel that I am well informed.
